Transcript of the video edition

Hundreds of thousands of people marched across France on October seventeenth. Why?

It started in September with high school students. They protested overcrowded classrooms and decaying school buildings.

On the seventeenth, marches took place in more than one hundred forty cities. The interior minister counted about five hundred fifty thousand people. The CGT union said eight hundred thousand.

Arrest numbers vary by source. Prime Minister Sebastien Lecornu said about twelve hundred people were arrested and more than one hundred fifty officers were hurt. Some outlets reported higher figures.

President Emmanuel Macron asked for calm and respect for people and property.

The protests began with classrooms. Now they are about whether people can afford daily life.
