WORLD · THE DEAL
One Phone Call Split Washington and Kyiv
One phone call, a sanctions break on Russian diesel, and an angry ally. What happened and why it matters.
Transcript of the video edition
October ninth. President Trump talks to Vladimir Putin. Hours later, the U.S. eases penalties on Russian diesel.
Why diesel? Russia stopped selling its diesel abroad in July. Ukraine keeps hitting its fuel plants. One estimate says Russia’s output is down about thirty percent.
That hurts here too. Diesel hit six dollars twenty a gallon. It runs trucks, trains and tractors, so most things cost more.
So the U.S. gave Russia a temporary pass, through April seventh, twenty twenty-seven. Trump says that means five hundred thousand tons in November, then a million. Experts say that’s about a month of normal sales. Big headline. Small tank.
Ukraine’s president, Zelensky, told Axios it was, quote, not fair and not honest. A U.S. official says Ukraine ignored about six requests to stop hitting those plants.
Twelve senators from both parties asked Trump to undo the deal. Watch three things: diesel prices, Congress, and any talk of a cease-fire.
