British Columbia’s premier called an election two years early. On Saturday, it backfired. The Conservatives won a majority.

In early counts, the Conservatives led or won sixty-two of ninety-three seats. The New Democrats, in power for nine years, fell to about twenty-nine.

Premier David Eby framed the race around Donald Trump. But in one poll, voters ranked the economy, housing and health care first, and none named Trump.

Incoming premier Lorne Doerkson promises a thousand-dollar income tax cut and double the natural gas output. He says growth will pay for more homes.

Eby conceded: “I accept full responsibility.” An early election is always a gamble, and this one lost. Want the story behind the results?
